java printing seems to suck, and suck differently across different
platforms. as a result, some "Page Setup" options may not work. for
instance, on Mac OS X, the page scaling doesn't seem to work. on Windows,
it seems to scale but chop up pages differently.

the workaround (for changing text size) is to set the editor font size
before printing if it matters that much, or to print 2 pages per sheet or 4
pages for sheet (this produces nicer columns anyway).

i'm writing these off as problems with the Java printing API until i hear
differently.
