I have installed the Linux binary package 1.0.9 onto Ubuntu Netbook Remix
9.10. Eee PC 1000H.
The PDE opens and I can open the examples.
Sometimes I can load a basic example which will work, but more often and
especially with the complex examples X appears to crash, I am logged out
and then I am returned to the login menu. It is not a full reboot, but
appears to be X that is being restarted.

You probably need to install a different version of Java:
http://processing.org/reference/troubleshooting/#linux
There's nothing in the Processing code that's actually capable of causing
the X server to crash, so you're probably hitting a Java problem.
