After installing Processing to my Applications folder (as normal) and
attempting to start it up, I get this message: "Processing cannot run
because it could not create a folder to store your settings", and then it
closes.

I'm running Processing 1.0.9
on Mac OSX 10.5.8 on a 2.2GHz Intel Core Duo Macbook.

That means it couldn't create a new directory called "Processing" inside
/Users/yourname/Library. Is there something about your machine setup
(permissions need to be repaired, or your home directory is on a server)
that would prevent this?

Hi Ben - that was what confused me - there shouldn't be anything strange
about my set up - I install Applications all the time and this is the first
time I've ever had a problem like this. I've tried Repairing Permissions
from the Disk Utility and I explicitly allowed RW access from all admin
accounts (not just my own) from the Library folder. That was what made me
think maybe there was something buggy happening.

Maybe try creating /Users/yourid/Library/Processing yourself, and then try
to run Processing?

It worked! Thanks so much for the help - I know this was probably a dumb
problem, but if anybody else has it, what happens is that even if I enable
all R/W settings for the folder, I still can't create a folder there. I
just made an empty folder somewhere else and dragged it in, and it gave me
the option to authenticate and add it, and now Processing is running fine.

Right, so there's something else wrong on your machine that it's asking you
to authenticate to place files there. You may just need to repair your disk
permissions, or figure out why things aren't writable in that folder (you
should never have to authenticate for that one). But it's likely to cause
problems with lots of other software, not just Processing.
